The Progressive Era

APUSH Gang,

This Thursday, you will take an exam on Ch. 27 & 28 of "American Pageant". Many questions will be like your previous two tests, but some may be from another source. If you have a memory stick, I would like to allow you the opportunity to watch a short film (30 minutes or so) titled "America in the 20th Century: The Progressive Era". You may download this film to your memory stick sometime today or tomorrow, watch it, and complete the following activities found in the Adobe file on my webpage titled "The Progressive Era":

-Video Quiz - 10 T/F questions
-Post-test - 10 Multiple Choice, plus the 8 short-response items
-Discussion Questions - choose any three

-Then, answer the following on this blog:

"What three reforms during the Progressive Era do you think have had the biggest impact on today's world?? Explain why..."

Yeah, all of this is required.

1) Pure Food and Drug Act (1906-1911) - Didn't allow meat factories to contaminate their products, with unwanted substances. This made sure that people wouldn't get diseases from the contaminated meat, because they had to put that on the label.

2) Elkins Act - It outlawed use of rebates by railroad officials, in order to stop them from deviating from published rates.

3) Recall - Removed an elected official before their term expired, because the people didn't approve of him.

The first reform of the Progressive Era that has had a huge impact on today’s world is the Meat Inspection act and the Pure Food and Drug act. Without these acts, we would have no idea what goes into our food and how it is made. Another reform that has a large impact is the creation of the direct primary. It gave the people a say in the presidential candidates and eliminated some of the corruption in politics. The third major reform is woman’s suffrage. The fight for women’s suffrage was a battle that lasted for over 75 years, and women continue to have the right to vote today.

Many reforms that took place during the Progressive Era revolutionized the the Nation into what we know it to be today. To me, the three that had the biggest impact on today's world were the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, and the 19th Amendment which was ratified in 1920. The majority of the Nation's population consumes a decent amount of meat per year. Without the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, you honestly wouldn't know what exactly was ground up in your meat. This act ensures that the environment in which your meat is processed is healthy, clean, and sanitary. The Pure Food and Drug Act also made a major impact. This act made sure that every ingredient that went into a product was labeled somewhere on the product. This is for people who are allergic to something, to make sure that they know what's in the product before eating it. Lastly, the 19th Amendment lead the biggest impact to society as we know it. The 19th Amendment, much fought for, gave sufferage rights to women. Year after year, women fought to gain acquire the right to vote and finally, in 1920, women were alloted the right to vote. To this every day, we still have women that take every advantage of this right, and fulfill their duty as an American by voting. The Prgoressive Era was the door to multiple reforms that shaped the Nation as we now know it.

The 2 major reforms were the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act. Without these two acts, our meat would not be properly inspected and we wouldn't know the ingredients in our foods. Before these acts, many people died from the poor quality of food, so these acts were extremely important. The third reform that seems important to me is the 17th amendment because it supported prohibition. I am just against drinking, drugs, etc. so this is really important to me.

I believe that the three most influential acts of the Progressive Era were the Pure Food and Drug Act, Meat Inspection Act, and the Elkin's Act.
Without the Pure Food and Drug Act we would have no idea what companies are putting in to any product we digest, whether that be medicine, food, or drinks, we have the right to know what we're consuming. Especially in today's time period where there are so many allergies and so many more being discovered, and health is a very big deal. We may not have made it to the point we're at today without the Progressive Era. The Meat Inspection Act plays right into this as well, in the same concept that we have the right to know what we put into our bodies.
I also fel that without the Elkin's Act, we would not be as far as we are today. The Elkins Act made it illegal for railroad companies to deviate from published rates through rebates. When Roosevelt passed this act as part of the "Square Deal", not only did his popularity greatly increase, but companies were no longer allowed to make shady deals that ended up hurting consumers.

1)The Pure-Food and Drug act was one of the major reforms during the Progressive era it was instigated by Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" which detailed the gruesome activities of the meat packing industry. After reading this book President Roosevelt sent an investigative team which confirmed the accusations, which encouraged the passing of these acts which enforced a label naming the ingredients and companies can not false advirtise special healing powers that the food or drugs don't have. So people today are safe from disgusting rat infested meat and protected from disease and death from food.

2)Woman suffrage was another large reform that affected todays society. Woman suffrage helped the equal rights movement all though it was very hard to achieve women protested for many years before the 19th amendment was passed.

3) the greatest reform was the preservation of our nations beauty, President Roosevelt passed many acts and reforms to stop industrailists from destroying the enviroment, without these reforms America would probably have been destroyed by now. so thank you reformers(=

I believe the three reforms that had the biggest impact on today's world were the Pure Food and Drug Act, Women's Suffrage, and the Meat Inspection Act. The Pure Food and Drug Act is very important because it prevents sicknesses that occur from unknown items being placed in foods. Also, the Meat Inspection Act is another important reform. This allows us to feel more comfortable with what is in our meat. After learning about the factories that had rats and poison bread laying on the meat, it is good to know that we dont have to worry about this problem anymore.
Another reform I feel made a huge impact on today's world is women's suffrage. Giving women the same rights as men was crucial to the equality movement and as a result, the 19th Amendment was passed.

I believe that the three reforms that had the most impact on today's world would have to be the Pure Food and Drug Act, the Forest Reserve Act and the Elkins Act.

The Pure Food and Drug Act is one of the biggest because, now, it will be much harder for companies to lie. Also, many more lives have been and will be saved. If it weren't for the P.F.&D. Act, deaths, like during the Spanish American war, would be more prominent.

The Forest Reserve Act is one of the biggest because we can still visit these places today. The forests and land are still preserved. This act forced people to stop and think for at least a second about the environment. It also opened more doors for other "nature lovers" to step up and change and protect other parts of the planet.

The Elkins Act is a big impact on today's society because, without it, it would have been harder to open the door with the Hepburn Act of 1906. Even though the Hepburn Act was more effective, I believe that it would have been less effective if the Railroad companies weren't "loosened up" by the Elkins Act. With this, other companies could finally have a little more control over what they had. Which, in turn, allowed growth of the economy.
